Population in Monaco: A record number of residents, symbol of cosmopolitan attractiveness.

The Principality of Monaco has once again confirmed its status as one of the most attractive and dynamic territories in the world. Published in March and April 2026 by IMSEE (Monaco Statistics), the latest census data provides a comprehensive demographic portrait of Monaco: a Principality experiencing continuous growth, unparalleled international diversity, and a Monegasque community with a unique profile marked by record longevity.

Monaco Surpasses 38,800 Residents: Enduring Appeal

As of December 31, 2025, Monaco had 38,857 residents, representing a year-on-year increase of +1,1%, or 434 additional inhabitants compared to the 2024 census. To gauge the scale of this long-term momentum, one need only look at the historical trend: the Principality had just 32 020 residents in 2000, 35 352 in 2008, and 37 308 in 2016. This steady growth within a territory of less than 2.1 square kilometres reflects a structural appeal unmatched in Europe.

The gender breakdown is nearly balanced, with men accounting for 49,2% (19 127 residents) and women 50,8% (19 730 residents). The average age of residents stands at 47,2 years (46,5 for men and 47,7 for women), and over 50,6% of residents aged 18 and older are married, indicating a population that is firmly established over the long term. The 50-64 age bracket is the most represented, making up 23,4% of the total population, followed by those aged 65 and over (17,9%) and the 0-17 age group (18,0%).

A Mosaic of 144 Nationalities: Monaco, the Capital of Cosmopolitanism

Without a doubt, one of Monaco’s most striking characteristics remains its cultural and national diversity. The Principality is home to residents of 144 different nationalities, making it one of the most cosmopolitan places on the planet. Monegasques form the largest residential group, accounting for 24,0% of the population (9 333 individuals), ahead of the French (21,3%), Italians (19,5%), and British (7,9%). The Swiss, Russians, Belgians, Germans, Dutch, and Portuguese complete the top 10 most represented nationalities.

In just one year, certain communities have seen notable growth: the number of Ukrainians increased by +11,9%, Australians by +11,8%, and Canadians by +5,9%, illustrating the Principality’s growing global reach far beyond its traditional European neighbours.

Who Are Monaco’s Newest Arrivals?

The question of new residents is crucial to understanding the Principality’s current real estate dynamics. Adult residents who settled between 2023 and 2025 and were still present as of December 31, 2025, predominantly come from France (30,6%), the United Kingdom (18,9%), and Italy (9,4%). Their average age is 44,7 years (46,1 for men and 43,3 for women), confirming that Monaco primarily attracts working professionals on the rise, seeking a premium, secured living environment and a favourable tax system.

At the district level, Monte-Carlo is home to 22,1% of residents, making it the most populated neighbourhood, followed by La Rousse – Saint Roman (20,7%) and La Condamine (13,7%). These geographical disparities directly influence the local real estate market, where demand and prices vary significantly from one area to another.

Monegasques: 9 959 Individuals, a Unique Identity

Beyond foreign residents, the Monegasque community follows its own trajectory and warrants special attention. As of December 31, 2025, Monaco recorded 9 959 Monegasque nationals, an increase of 76 people (+0,8%) compared to 2024. Women remain in the majority, making up 54,1% of the community (5 389 women to 4 570 men), a historical imbalance linked to the acquisition of nationality through marriage, which was long reserved for women. The average age of the Monegasque community is 45,3 years, with a notable gap between men (42,3 years) and women (47,9 years).

A remarkable 93,7% of Monegasques live in the Principality, a proportion that has remained highly stable since 2012. Outside Monaco, France hosts the largest diaspora, with 4,9% of the community. Nearly nine out of ten Monegasques were born in Monaco (6 260 people) or France (2 648 people).

A Negative Natural Balance for the First Time in 30 Years

The 2025 edition of the Demographic Observatory reveals an unprecedented shift. In 2025, 84 births of Monegasque nationality were recorded (45 boys and 39 girls), compared to 102 in 2024. During the same period, 93 Monegasques died (37 men and 56 women). This imbalance resulted in a negative natural balance of -9, a first in over thirty years of the Monegasque community’s demographic history.

Despite this decline in the birth rate, the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) remains remarkably high: 2 children per woman over the 2023-2025 period, well above the European average of around 1,4. This places Monaco on par with the United States and significantly ahead of France (1,53), Italy (1,14), and Germany (1,39).

Record Life Expectancy: Monegasques Among the Longest-Living in the World

On this front, the Monegasque community is setting historical records. Life expectancy at birth for the 2023-2025 period reached an average of 88.5 years (86,4 years for men and 90,6 years for women). The average age at death has risen steadily since the 1950s, climbing from 67,8 years to 84,5 years over the 2020-2025 period. In terms of marriage, 88 weddings involving at least one Monegasque spouse were celebrated in 2025, resulting in a marriage rate of 8,8‰, a rebound following three years of decline linked to the 2022 legislative reform on the acquisition of nationality.

What These Figures Mean for Monaco Real Estate

The demographic data published by IMSEE is more than just statistics: it outlines an increasingly tight residential market.
