Moving to Monaco is much more than a lifestyle choice, it is also a strong decision for your children’s future. In terms of education, the Principality offers a unique environment that combines academic rigor, multiculturalism, and personalized support. From the early years of preschool to university, Monaco’s education system reflects the Principality’s core values: excellence, care, and openness to the world.
A structured and forward-looking educational system
Supervised by the Department of National Education, Youth, and Sports, the Monegasque school system is based on the French curriculum, enriched with local and international features. Schooling is mandatory from age 6 to 16, but many children are admitted from age 3, depending on availability, allowing early socialization and learning.
Monaco places great importance on student support. Small class sizes, qualified teachers, and individualized attention promote academic success while respecting each child’s pace and needs. Language learning starts early: French is the primary language of instruction, but English is introduced from preschool in some schools, along with German and the Monégasque language, taught in both public and private institutions.
The Monegasque system also values differentiated paths: European sections, international programs, music, arts, or sports options, and language support programs like French as a Foreign Language (FLE) for non-native speakers.

A simple, smooth, and inclusive registration process
Children residing in Monaco are enrolled in schools in their local district, whether for primary or secondary education. To enroll a student, parents must submit a file including a residency certificate issued by Public Safety, a birth certificate with parentage, past report cards, and any other useful documents based on the family’s situation.
Students coming from abroad may be subject to an assessment test to ensure proper placement based on their level. This adaptability reflects the Principality’s commitment to ensuring each child’s successful integration.
A wide range of schools for all educational paths
Monaco offers a dense and efficient network of schools throughout the Principality’s districts, guaranteeing every family local access to quality education. The school system includes public schools, private schools under contract, and private schools outside of contract.
Public schools are free and follow the French national curriculum, under the supervision of the Monegasque government.
Private schools under contract also follow this curriculum but often include a specific educational project (usually religious), with partial funding by the state.
Independant Private schools are completely independent. They freely define their methods, curriculum, and fees, while meeting legal obligations.
